Josh Hader Returns to Astros Active For Tuesday Night

josh hader is back on the Astros’ active roster for Tuesday night’s game after being reinstated from the injured list. Manager Joe Espada said the 32-year-old closer would be available, giving Houston a finished piece it has been without for more than two months.

Astros roster move

The Astros announced the reinstatement Tuesday at 2:25pm and cleared a 40-man roster spot by moving Carlos Correa to the 60-day injured list. To get the active roster ready, Braden Shewmake went on the 10-day injured list retroactive to May 31 with a right adductor strain, Zach Cole was recalled, and Logan VanWey was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land before Hader joined the group.

Hader’s return closes a long absence that began when his 2025 season ended in mid-August with a capsule strain in his left shoulder. He did not need surgery after that injury, but he later began feeling biceps pain early in spring training and was diagnosed with tendinitis, which ruled him out for Opening Day.

Hader rehab numbers

His rehab run showed both progress and a warning sign. In his first seven rehab appearances, Hader allowed one run on four hits and a walk with 11 strikeouts in seven innings, then gave up five runs, three earned, on four hits and two walks without a strikeout in his final two outings.

Those numbers pushed his minor league ERA to 4.15, and his sinker sat at 93.9 mph in Triple-A after averaging 95.5 mph last year. Houston is getting him back with that velocity gap in view, but also with a track record that still points to late-inning value when he is right.

Houston bullpen pressure

The timing matters because Houston has been piecing together the back end of games without Hader. Bryan Abreu has lost about three miles per hour off his heater this season, from 97.3 mph to 94.8 mph, and has walked nearly 24% of his opponents, while Steven Okert and Bryan King have also taken modest steps back.

That leaves Espada with a more stable late-game option once Hader is in the mix. The Astros now have their closer available for Tuesday night, and the roster moves around him show how much room they made to bring him back.
