KPMG Opens Cra My Account Breach Claims Portal This Summer — $8.7 Million
Canadians affected by the cra my account breach may soon be able to file for money from an $8.7 million settlement after a federal court approved the deal earlier this year. The claims window will matter most to people whose personal and financial information was exposed in the 2020 attacks.
KPMG settlement checks
The settlement covers people whose CRA My Account or My Service Canada Account was compromised between June 15 and August 30, 2020, and it also includes Canadians who received an email from KPMG about the settlement. Those readers can check eligibility by entering their last name, the last three digits of their SIN and their email address on.
Fraudulent CERB applications
The cyberattacks reached over 47,000 Canadians, and in many cases stolen credentials were used to file fraudulent CERB applications in victims’ names. That turns the settlement from a broad privacy case into a narrower compensation process for people who can tie their account exposure to the 2020 breach.
Six months after launch
The claims portal has not opened yet, but it is expected to go live sometime this summer. Once it opens, eligible Canadians will have six months to submit a claim through or by phone at 1-833-724-6160, and the filing period itself starts 60 days after the appeal deadline on the approval judgment passes without a challenge.
