Alaska Airlines Cuts Saver Fare Miles Earning August 1

Alaska Airlines Cuts Saver Fare Miles Earning August 1

Alaska Airlines will stop awarding Atmos Rewards and elite-qualifying status credit on most Saver fares for travel from August 1, changing what budget travelers get from the airline’s lowest-priced tickets. Customers who buy Saver fares before June 11 keep the current 30% earning rate, even if they fly after July 31.

The shift leaves flights departing through July 31 under the existing structure. After August 1, newly booked Saver tickets will earn neither redeemable miles nor elite-qualifying credit, while Main Cabin and higher fare classes keep earning opportunities.

Alaska Airlines Saver fares

Alaska Airlines said the change is intended to support the long-term sustainability of its loyalty program. Saver fares are the carrier’s version of basic economy, and the airline previously let passengers earn reduced Atmos rewards on those tickets.

For travelers, the practical cutoff is June 11 for preserving the 30% earning rate on purchases made before that date. A ticket bought before then keeps that reduced earning even if the trip happens after July 31; a Saver fare bought on or after August 1 does not earn Atmos Rewards or elite-qualifying status credit.

Delta Air Lines and American Airlines

The Alaska move follows similar changes elsewhere. Delta Air Lines eliminated mileage earning on basic economy tickets several years ago, and American Airlines recently said passengers buying basic economy fares would no longer earn AAdvantage miles or elite-status credit.

That leaves fewer low-fare tickets tied to loyalty earning across the larger U.S. carriers. Alaska’s change preserves rewards on Main Cabin and higher fares, but it removes them from the airline’s most restrictive fare class for new Saver bookings starting August 1.

June 11 and July 31

The dates now matter more than the fare name. Travelers who want the current 30% earning rate need to buy before June 11, while flights leaving through July 31 still fall under the old rules. After that, Saver tickets booked for August 1 and later will not build miles or elite credit.

For anyone choosing between fare types, the decision now comes down to whether the lower fare is worth giving up loyalty earnings on future Saver bookings. Alaska Airlines has set the line at June 11 for existing reduced earnings and August 1 for the new no-earning rule.
