Elon Musk Tops $1.11tn as Ftse 100 Wealth Surges
Elon Musk became the world’s first trillionaire on Friday, with his ftse 100 wealth crossing that mark after SpaceX’s record-breaking stock market debut. estimated his net worth at about $1.11tn, leaving his fortune tied to the public value of Tesla and the private value now assigned to SpaceX.
Tesla and SpaceX stakes
12% of Musk’s wealth is tied to Tesla, which carries a market valuation of around $1.5tn, while he owns a 42% stake in SpaceX, now worth more than $2tn. Those holdings put most of his fortune in shares that move with investor appetite, not in liquid assets.
Less than 0.1% of Musk’s net worth was held in cash, he said on X in February. That leaves a fortune dominated by paper gains and makes the trillion-dollar mark dependent on the market values of the companies around it.
2020 to 2025 swings
$28bn was Musk’s estimated fortune in January 2020, when he ranked 35th among the world’s richest people. His wealth rose sharply in 2020 as Tesla and SpaceX expanded in value, and by January 2021 he had briefly overtaken Jeff Bezos to become the world’s richest person.
2022 brought a downturn in US tech stocks, and Musk’s fortune dipped. It fell sharply again in early 2025 as investor concerns over his role in the Trump administration coincided with a slump in Tesla’s share price. The latest jump came from SpaceX, but the same structure that lifted him also leaves him exposed to the next slide.
Tech wealth now dominates
2015 was a different era for the global rich list: only two of the world’s top 10 richest people were from the tech world. Now seven of the top 10 are from tech, including the entire top six, with Larry Page, Sergey Brin, Jeff Bezos, Bernard Arnault and Mark Zuckerberg among the names at the top of the field.
For readers tracking Musk’s holdings, the practical point is blunt: the number is only as durable as Tesla’s $1.5tn valuation and SpaceX’s move above $2tn. If either shifts hard, the world’s newest trillionaire can move just as quickly back below the line.
