BMW X5 Teaser Today
The teaser is the first public look at the fifth-generation X5. BMW tied the grille shape to the 1600, 2000, and 2002, using older design cues to give the new SUV a retro edge even as the underlying package moves onto the Neue Klasse platform and technologies.
That combination is the part buyers and plant workers will be watching most closely. The X5 is one of BMW’s best-selling cars worldwide, and BMW’s Spartanburg, South Carolina manufacturing plant produces it, so the next version carries weight well beyond styling.
Neue Klasse And The iX5
BMW says the 2027 BMW X5 is the first version of the new architecture not to be based around an electric powertrain. BMW also says buyers will have combustion, electric, and hydrogen choices, while gas versions may receive expanded mild-hybrid operation and an available plug-in hybrid model may be offered.
The same Neue Klasse rollout extends to the iX5, which BMW expects to debut as the first-ever electric SUV using the platform. BMW says that model should use a version of Gen6 battery technology, with cylindrical cells packed more closely than prismatic cells, and Gen6 motors built without rare-earth minerals in an 800-volt, electrically excited synchronous design.

BMW is using a similar design strategy elsewhere in the lineup. The 2027 BMW i3 gets retro-inspired Neue Klasse styling, 400-kilowatt charging, and 440 miles of range, showing the brand is separating its new models by proportions and lighting rather than one uniform face.
Tomorrow’s reveal should answer how far BMW will push the X5’s split identity in practice. For buyers, the immediate takeaway is straightforward: the familiar SUV shape stays, but its next version is arriving with a new visual language and a wider set of powertrain paths than the teaser itself spells out.
