Nam Joo-hyuk Returns in The East Palace After 2024 Service — East Palace Netflix Review

East Palace Netflix review starts with a return: Nam Joo-hyuk is back in The East Palace, which premiered on July 17 after he completed mandatory military service in September 2024. For Netflix, the series arrives as a summer release built around folklore, shamanistic motifs, and a comeback that already carries baggage.

Nam Joo-hyuk in Gu-cheon

Nam Joo-hyuk plays Gu-cheon, a man capable of traversing the boundary between the human and spirit realms. That setup gives the series a clear engine: a cursed royal ground, a king who needs answers, and a protagonist built to move between worlds rather than simply react to them.

Roh Yoon-seo portrays a palace maid shrouded in mystery, while Cho Seung-woo plays the king. Together, the three roles give the story its working triangle, with the king summoning Gu-cheon and the palace maid to unravel the mystery at the center of the palace.

July 8 at Seoul

Director Choi Jung-kyu said at a Seoul press conference on July 8 that the series was designed to feel native to its setting rather than mechanically decorative. “Rather than forcing Korean elements into the narrative, I thought they would naturally blend into the historical setting.”

He also said, “We devoted a great deal of effort to post-production so the story would come across in a clear way.” That matters here because the series depends on visual effects to sell what cannot be staged in one take: unseen creatures, spirit-world crossings, and the pacing needed to keep those elements legible.

Choi Jung-kyu’s visual bet

Choi Jung-kyu added, “Additionally, we worked hard to capture distinctly Korean aesthetics and visuals. Since many elements are drawn from Korea’s traditional culture, I believe viewers will find plenty to enjoy.” He also said, “It must have been challenging for the actors, who often had to perform opposite characters and creatures that weren’t actually there.”

Cho Seung-woo pointed to one recurring image: “There’s a pond that appears throughout the series.” His view of it was blunt: “On the surface, it looks calm, but beneath it lies tremendous tension and countless stories, almost like the eye of a storm.”

2022 allegations shadow return

June 2022 still sits over this comeback. Nam Joo-hyuk’s career was derailed by anonymous school bullying allegations before he enlisted in 2023, and he has consistently denied them as groundless. That history makes The East Palace more than a normal release; it is a test of whether viewers separate the work from a controversy that has already shaped his public arc.

September 2024 ended the military chapter, but the series is the real reset. The cleanest read is simple: this is the first project that lets him re-enter the market on screen, and its reception will decide whether the comeback lands as a durable return or just another title in a crowded summer slate.
