Ryan saw thick smoke rising near Tesco Maryhill on Friday as shoppers and staff were evacuated after a car fire in the store’s car park on Maryhill Road in Glasgow. He said the scene turned to “total panic” as firefighters worked outside the supermarket.
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said the call came at 4.21pm and two appliances were sent to the Tesco supermarket. Police were also there, and the car park was cordoned off while crews dealt with the blaze.
Maryhill Road at 4.21pm
The fire broke out at the Tesco store in Glasgow after smoke was seen pouring from the car park entrance. Ryan, a local resident and energy consultant, said: “I was just coming home on the bus and I saw the smoke which looked like it was coming out the roof of the Tesco store.”
He said he then rounded the corner to get to his flat and saw the source of the smoke. “Then when I rounded the corner to get to my flat I saw it was a car on fire. It looks like an electric car, although I’ve no idea how it started,” he said.
Scottish Fire and Rescue Service response
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service said two appliances were mobilised and were still at the scene. Staff and customers were taken outside while firefighters tackled the fire, and Ryan said, “The staff and customers were being evacuated and it was total panic.”
He added: “They are just standing outside now waiting for the firefighters to finish.”

The car park remained closed off as the response continued, with police in attendance beside the fire crews. The car involved was believed to be electric, but the cause had not been explained in the information available, leaving the most immediate question focused on what started the blaze at Tesco Maryhill.
