Uber to Compete with Waymo’s Robotaxi Leadership in San Francisco

Uber is gearing up to compete directly with Waymo’s leadership in the robotaxi market, specifically in San Francisco. The company has partnered with Lucid and Nuro to deploy autonomous vehicles, aiming to reclaim market share lost in recent years.

Testing and Launch Plans

Recently, Uber, Lucid, and Nuro commenced road testing of their initial autonomous vehicle, a modified Lucid Gravity SUV. To fully operationalize their service, they must secure two crucial permits:

  • Driverless operational permits from California’s Department of Motor Vehicles.
  • Ridesharing permits from the California Public Utilities Commission.

Uber’s Chief Product Officer, Sachin Kansal, expressed excitement over launching the next-generation robotaxi program in the Bay Area, known for its technological advancements. The public rollout is anticipated next year.

Massive Robotaxi Deployment

As part of a significant agreement, Uber, Lucid, and Nuro plan to introduce 20,000 autonomous vehicles across the U.S. over the following six years. The vehicle fleet will be owned by Uber or managed by a third-party partner. Lucid has started delivering engineering prototypes to Nuro, which are being retrofitted for driverless functionality. The companies aim to include over 100 robotaxis in their engineering fleet shortly.

Testing and Validation Procedures

Nuro will spearhead the testing and validation phases. This encompasses:

  • Simulation exercises.
  • Closed-course testing.
  • On-road trials with human safety drivers on board.

Market Competition and Collaboration

Uber’s move comes as a response to Waymo’s growing dominance in the robotaxi sector. In a recent analysis, credit card data indicated that Waymo’s market presence in San Francisco was comparable to that of Lyft in December 2024, particularly for trips within Waymo’s operational range.

Interestingly, Uber and Waymo are also collaborating in other cities such as Austin, Atlanta, and Phoenix, where Waymo’s robotaxi services are exclusively available on the Uber app. Observers are keen to see how this partnership evolves amidst increasing competition.
