ESPN Shuts Down Bet, Partners with DraftKings
ESPN is set to discontinue its standalone betting app, ESPN Bet, as it partners with DraftKings to enhance its sports betting features. This shift will culminate in a shutdown of ESPN Bet by December 2023.
New Partnership with DraftKings
On Thursday, ESPN announced its decision to end collaboration with Penn Entertainment, the previous partner responsible for developing ESPN Bet. Starting December 1, 2023, users will have access to various DraftKings features directly within ESPN’s platforms, including a betting tab in the revamped ESPN app.
Integration Features
- Users can access DraftKings’ sportsbook.
- Daily fantasy sports options will be available.
- Pick6 features will also be introduced at launch.
Future of Sports Betting at ESPN
While the initial integration will take place in December, a complete rollout of all features is expected by 2026. This timeline allows for a gradual implementation, ensuring a seamless transition for users accustomed to ESPN Bet.
In the wake of ESPN Bet’s closure, Penn Entertainment will rebrand its sports betting application as theScoreBet. This new direction highlights a continuing evolution within the sports betting landscape, driven by strategic partnerships.
Quote from ESPN Chairman
ESPN chairman Jimmy Pitaro shared insights into the transition: “Our betting approach has focused on offering an integrated experience within our products. Working with DraftKings, a leader in the space, will allow us to build upon that foundation and grow our ESPN direct-to-consumer business.”
This partnership underscores ESPN’s commitment to enhancing the user experience for sports fans, leveraging the expertise of DraftKings in the competitive sports betting market.
