Toyota Hilux Unveils Electric Model, Retains Diesel and Gas Options
The much-anticipated ninth-generation Toyota Hilux is set to make its debut in 2026, featuring significant innovations. For the first time, Toyota introduces a fully electric version of the Hilux alongside traditional diesel and gasoline options, catering to diverse consumer needs.
Toyota Hilux: A New Era
The electric model, highlighted in recent promotional images, showcases an updated design influenced by the Tacoma. The Hilux will primarily feature a double-cab configuration in Europe, aligning with customer demand for this particular style. Other markets, including Australia and Thailand, will still have access to single cab and Smart Cab variants.

Interior Improvements
The interior of the new Hilux has undergone a complete transformation. Inspired by the Land Cruiser, it features an upright design with geometric shapes and dual 12.3-inch screens. The layout prioritizes functionality, offering physical controls alongside modern technology.
Technical Specifications
The electric Hilux utilizes a dual-motor setup powered by a 59.2-kWh lithium-ion battery. It boasts a range of approximately 149 miles (240 kilometers) and a maximum payload capacity of 1,576 pounds (715 kilograms). For towing, it can manage up to 3,527 pounds (1,600 kilograms).
Additionally, Toyota will continue to offer a 2.8-liter turbodiesel engine with mild-hybrid technology. This version supports a payload of 2,205 pounds (1,000 kilograms) and can tow up to 7,716 pounds (3,500 kilograms), ensuring it remains suitable for heavy-duty applications.
Diversification Plans
Looking to the future, Toyota plans to introduce a hydrogen fuel cell variant by 2028, collaborating with BMW on related technology. Electric power steering will debut in Western European markets, while traditional hydraulic systems will remain in Eastern Europe. New safety features include blind spot monitoring and other advanced driver assistance systems.
Market Launch and Expectations
The electric Hilux is expected to hit European markets in December, with the diesel variant scheduled for release in spring. Anticipated as the best-selling model among the new lineup, the diesel offers an economical option compared to the electric alternative.
With over 21 million Hilux units sold since its initial release in 1968, Toyota aims to maintain its legacy through thoughtful enhancements in the ninth generation. While it will be absent from the U.S. market to avoid competing with the Tacoma, the Hilux will continue to thrive globally.
