Ryan Day Praises Former 5-Star Prospect’s Top Form at Ohio State
Ryan Day, the head coach of Ohio State’s top-ranked football team, has seen a notable transformation in defensive tackle Eddrick Houston. A month ago, Day challenged Houston, a former five-star prospect, to elevate his performance as a sophomore starter. This week, Day praised Houston for his impressive progress on the field.
Houston’s Development Under Pressure
Eddrick Houston’s journey at Ohio State has been anything but straightforward. As a highly rated recruit in the 2024 class, he began his collegiate career as a defensive end. By the midpoint of last season, Houston transitioned to defensive tackle, a demanding position change that he handled with remarkable adaptability.
Impactful Early Career
- Houston played a vital role in the Buckeyes’ defensive line, contributing nearly 14 snaps per game during the College Football Playoff.
- His performance helped lead Ohio State to its ninth national title.
Challenges and Injuries
Despite a promising start, the 2025 season began with difficulties for Houston. An injury during the first preseason practice posed challenges ahead of the Week 1 matchup with Texas. Inconsistent performances followed, with Pro Football Focus reporting defensive grades below 60 in key matches.
Turning Point of the Season
On October 4, against Minnesota, Houston began to turn things around, earning a grade of 77.9. However, another injury sidelined him against Illinois the following week. He returned on October 18 against Wisconsin, where he was recognized as a champion performer, even though Tywone Malone Jr. was starting alongside Kayden McDonald.
Recent Performance Boost
After a bye week, Houston emerged revitalized for the stretch run of the season. His best game came against Penn State, where he recorded three tackles, a sack, and a forced fumble. His exceptional pass-rush grade of 91.6 was the highest among all defensive tackles in the nation.
Recognition from the Coaching Staff
With Malone injured against Purdue, Houston stepped into the starting role once more. Coach Day noted Houston’s infectious personality and growing confidence on the field. Day expressed optimism about Houston’s continued development as a key player for the Buckeyes.
“Eddrick is a great young man. He’s got a lot of talent, and he’s learning how this all works,” Day remarked, highlighting Houston’s importance to the defense as the season progresses.
