Google Unveils WeatherNext 2: Its Most Accurate Forecasting Model

Google DeepMind, in collaboration with Google Research, has launched WeatherNext 2, touted as its most advanced forecasting model. This innovation significantly enhances weather predictions for various Google applications, including Pixel Weather.

Key Features of WeatherNext 2

WeatherNext 2 stands out for its efficiency and speed. The model offers:

  • Forecast generation up to eight times faster than previous iterations.
  • High resolution with predictions updated hourly.
  • Capability to predict crucial weather variables, including wind speed, precipitation, and atmospheric pressure.

Revolutionary Prediction Techniques

The model’s core innovation lies in its ability to forecast numerous potential weather outcomes from a single data point. This allows WeatherNext 2 to predict rare, yet severe weather events more effectively than ever before. Traditionally, such predictions would take extensive time even on powerful supercomputers, but WeatherNext 2 can produce results in under a minute using a single Tensor Processing Unit (TPU).

Daily Forecasting and Advanced Modeling

WeatherNext 2 produces four six-hour forecasts each day. It utilizes the latest available global weather data as input. A Functional Generative Network (FGN) is employed to create diverse forecasts, enhancing the accuracy of the results.

The model excels in predicting what meteorologists call “marginals” and “joints.” Marginals involve specific weather elements like temperature and wind speed. Through its unique training approach, WeatherNext 2 forecasts large, interconnected systems (joints)—this skill is vital for predicting large-scale weather events like regional heat waves or wind farm energy output.

Performance Improvements

WeatherNext 2 outperforms Google’s previous forecasting model in 99.9% of variables, including temperature, humidity, and wind. The advancements provide users with improved accuracy across all Google weather platforms, including Google Search, Gemini, Pixel Weather, and Google Maps.

Future Availability and Expansion

Businesses, scientists, and developers will have access to WeatherNext 2 through Google Cloud’s Vertex AI, BigQuery, and Earth Engine tools. Google plans to continuously expand data sources and enhance access to ensure broad utilization of this cutting-edge technology.
