Roblox Implements Age Checks, Sets New Safety Standard for Communication

Roblox has introduced robust age checks to enhance safety for its users, particularly younger players. This initiative aims to create a safer online environment while respecting user privacy. The platform’s new age assurance measures utilize Facial Age Estimation technology to categorize users into appropriate age groups for communication.

New Age Assurance Implementation

Jules Polonetsky, CEO of the Future of Privacy Forum, highlighted the significance of these age checks. He stated that they would strengthen protections for younger users while honoring parental control rights. Parents maintain access to their children’s accounts and can adjust their child’s birthday through parental controls. They can do this after their child has completed the age check process.

Age-Based Communication

The implementation of age checks allows Roblox to establish age-based chat settings. This ensures that users have a clearer understanding of who they are communicating with, thereby limiting interactions between minors and adults. The platform has also set default chat restrictions for users under nine years of age, requiring parental consent for chat access.

• Chat in experiences is off by default for users under 9 years.
• Chat outside of experiences is restricted for users under 13 years.

Roblox consulted with child development experts to set sensible limitations on chat functionalities. After completing the age check, users will be assigned to the following age groups:

• Under 9
• 9-12
• 13-15
• 16-17
• 18-20
• 21+

For instance, a user estimated to be 12 can only chat with those who are 15 or younger. In contrast, a user estimated to be 18 can communicate with others aged 16 and above. Additionally, age-checked users aged 13 or older can connect with trusted family members in a safe manner.

Future Developments

Roblox recognizes the value of family engagement in gameplay and learning. Age-checked users will soon have dedicated communication solutions for chatting with parents or siblings in different age groups. This initiative will further foster interaction within families on the platform, reinforcing safety while allowing for meaningful connections.
