Sonderwunsch Cayenne Debuts with 70s Desert Vibes

The Icons of Porsche event in Dubai recently showcased the passion for the iconic automobile brand. This festival, the largest of its kind in the Middle East, attracted enthusiasts from around the globe. Among the highlights was an impressive detail: the customized reconstruction of a vintage Cayenne through the Sonderwunsch program.

Sonderwunsch Cayenne: A Unique Revival

The event featured a unique project involving the complete overhaul of a first-generation Cayenne. This initiative falls under Porsche’s “Factory Re-Commission” category, a service aimed at reimagining vehicles for customers. Alexander Fabig, Porsche’s Vice President of Individualisation and Classic, emphasized this project’s significance. “We have mainly focused on classic Porsches or rare models, but this 16-year-old Cayenne shows the range of dreams among Porsche enthusiasts,” he said.

About the Client

The Cayenne customization was commissioned by Phillip Sarofim, a noted entrepreneur and car collector. Inspired by the iconic 911 Spirit 70, Sarofim envisioned a retro-style look reminiscent of the 1970s for his Cayenne. The base vehicle was a 2009 Cayenne GTS with approximately 50,000 miles (around 80,500 kilometers) on the clock, needing only a retrofitted towbar.

Design Features

To capture the essence of the 1970s, the Cayenne features:

  • Exterior color: Blackolive, a custom paint.
  • Matt black lower body and alloy wheels to enhance its off-road aesthetics.
  • Interior: Extensive leather in English green paired with classic Pasha black/olive textile.
  • Contrasting light-brushed aluminium trim on the passenger side and doors.

These choices create a unique and striking design, ready for adventures in the desert.

Adventure Awaits

Sarofim eagerly anticipates driving through the Rub al-Khali Desert with his customized Cayenne and a classic Airstream caravan. The unique combination of retro style and modern capability reaffirms the Cayenne’s versatility.

Understanding Factory Re-Commission

Porsche’s Sonderwunsch program allows for high-end customization of existing vehicles. Customers can choose colors and materials for both interior and exterior. After an initial assessment, the vehicle is transported to Zuffenhausen for inspection and further evaluation.

History of the Cayenne

The Cayenne first debuted in 2002, originally developed under the code name Colorado. Recognizing the potential for a Porsche SUV as early as 1989, Ferry Porsche’s vision led to the creation of a model that appealed to a new market. Today, the first generation, produced until 2010, enjoys a dedicated fan base.

The successful transformation of this Cayenne exemplifies Porsche’s commitment to innovation while celebrating its legacy. The visit to the Icons of Porsche event not only highlights the brand’s past but also signals its exciting future through customizable offerings that reflect individual aspirations.
