With disruptions to federal SNAP benefits due to a government shutdown, many are facing heightened stress levels. “You’re starting to see an uptick in violence, especially domestic violence, and a lot of substance use,” he observed.

• In Queens, New York, Rosetta Savannah is experiencing similar issues. She reported receiving only half of her usual SNAP benefits, forcing her to substitute turkey with chicken for her Thanksgiving meal.
• In Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, Bonnie Green, a homeowner previously considered upper-middle class, is making drastic cuts to her gift-giving and holiday meals due to financial constraints. Her job at the National Science Foundation was recently eliminated, significantly impacting her income.

Green created a scholarship fund to assist struggling students at her university, emphasizing the importance of education for future opportunities. “A bachelor’s degree is critical,” she stressed, noting that several students may be forced to drop out due to financial difficulties.
