Island Braces for Heavy Snow and Strong Winds on Wednesday

On Wednesday, the island is preparing for severe weather as a strong Nor’easter approaches. The storm will bring significant snowfall, ice, and rain across much of Newfoundland. Meteorologist Erika Price from Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued multiple weather alerts for the region.

Snow and Wind Forecast

Residents can expect heavy snowfall in various parts of the island. Forecasts suggest:

  • Most areas: 15 to 25 cm of snow
  • Harbour Breton to Bonavista: 30 to 40 cm of snow
  • West coast: approximately 10 cm of snow predicted

The Northern Peninsula will likely avoid the worst conditions associated with this system. However, snow accumulation combined with wind gusts up to 100 km/h will severely impact visibility, making travel hazardous.

Avalon Peninsula Weather Conditions

The situation on the Avalon Peninsula will be more complicated. Residents can expect:

  • Snow in the morning
  • Transition to rain and ice pellets by afternoon
  • Return to snow by evening

Given these forecasts, individuals should prepare for unsafe travel conditions throughout the day. It is advisable to monitor updates from local authorities and avoid unnecessary travel during the peak of the storm.
