OpenAI Criticized for Promoting Apps Resembling Advertisements

OpenAI recently faced criticism after its ChatGPT suggested integrating the Peloton app during an off-topic conversation. This incident raised concerns among users about the potential for advertisements within the platform, particularly for those who pay for the subscription service.

Criticism of ChatGPT’s App Suggestions

The backlash began when Yuchen Jin, co-founder of AI startup Hyperbolic, shared a screenshot on X. The screenshot depicted ChatGPT suggesting the Peloton app during a discussion unrelated to health and fitness. Jin highlighted that he paid $200 per month for the ChatGPT Pro Plan, an expense that typically signals an ad-free experience.

  • ChatGPT suggested Peloton app without context.
  • Over 462,000 views on Jin’s post.
  • Users expressed frustration over paid services showing app suggestions.

OpenAI’s Clarification

Daniel McAuley, OpenAI’s data lead for ChatGPT, responded to the outcry. He stated that the suggestion was not sponsored and had no financial backing. However, he acknowledged that the irrelevant nature of the advice led to a confusing experience for users.

  • “This is not an ad,” McAuley tweeted.
  • OpenAI plans to improve user experience and suggestions.

Testing Integrated Apps in ChatGPT

An OpenAI spokesperson explained that these app suggestions were part of ongoing testing to integrate applications into user interactions with ChatGPT. They referenced a prior announcement about a new app platform designed to immerse apps seamlessly into conversations. Yet the suggestion’s context prompted mixed reactions.

Despite any relevant context, users perceived app suggestions as intrusive advertisements. Additionally, OpenAI does not currently allow users to disable these recommendations, which may drive them to seek alternatives among competing chat services.

Current Status of ChatGPT App Integrations

At present, ChatGPT apps are accessible to users outside of the EU, Switzerland, and the U.K., and the integrations remain in pilot testing. OpenAI collaborates with various app developers, such as:

  • Booking.com
  • Canva
  • Coursera
  • Figma
  • Expedia
  • Zillow

As OpenAI continues to refine its approach, the integration of app suggestions will be critical to maintaining user trust and satisfaction within the platform.
