United Airlines Reveals 2026 Premier Status Requirements and Updates
United Airlines has announced significant updates regarding its MileagePlus program starting in 2026. Notably, the requirements for achieving Premier elite status will remain unchanged. However, there are substantial modifications in the area of upgrades, particularly regarding award tickets and PlusPoints.
Premier Status Requirements for 2026
The criteria for qualifying for Premier status will not see any alterations in 2026. Here’s a breakdown of the requirements:
- 15 Premier qualifying flights (PQFs) plus 5,000 Premier qualifying points (PQPs), or 6,000 PQPs
- 30 PQFs plus 10,000 PQPs, or 12,000 PQPs
- 45 PQFs plus 15,000 PQPs, or 18,000 PQPs
- 60 PQFs plus 22,000 PQPs, or 28,000 PQPs
Flights on eligible United partner airlines also contribute towards Premier status qualification, although a minimum of four flights must be on United itself.
PQP Boost for Current Premier Members
As part of the new updates, existing Premier members will see a PQP head start into 2026:
- Premier Silver: 300 PQPs
- Premier Gold: 600 PQPs
- Premier Platinum: 900 PQPs
- Premier 1K: 1,400 PQPs
Easier Upgrades for Award Tickets
Starting February 1, 2026, all Premier members will be eligible for upgrades when traveling on award tickets. This includes:
- Complimentary upgrades for Premier elite members
- Upgrades secured using PlusPoints
This change enhances the upgrade experience, making it more consistent for passengers flying on award tickets.
Changes to PlusPoints
United Airlines will implement dynamic pricing for PlusPoints upgrades starting in February 2027. This means the amount of PlusPoints required for an upgrade will vary based on several factors such as demand, travel dates, and available seats.
Currently, a fixed chart exists to guide members on PlusPoints needed for upgrades. However, with dynamic pricing, passengers may encounter fluctuating costs for premium seating.
Additional PlusPoints Earning Opportunities
Beginning January 1, 2026, Premier 1K members can earn additional PlusPoints through eligible co-branded United credit card spending. Previously, spending contributed only to PQPs, but this change aims to enhance upgrade potential for elite members.
Expanded Saver Award Availability
United Airlines has also broadened the availability of Polaris saver awards for certain MileagePlus members. Qualifying Premier members and United Chase credit card holders will have better access to lower-cost award redemptions for premium seating.
Looking Ahead
The recent announcements are part of United’s ongoing evolution of the MileagePlus program. Stakeholders should keep an eye on future developments that may impact the program significantly.
