Prada Unveils $930 ‘Made in India’ Kolhapuri Sandals Amid Backlash

Prada has launched a limited-edition line of Kolhapuri sandals, priced at $930. This announcement comes after the brand faced criticism for previously showcasing designs that closely mirrored the traditional Kolhapuri footwear.

Introduction of Kolhapuri Sandals

The Italian luxury brand will produce 2,000 pairs of these sandals in Maharashtra and Karnataka. This partnership involves two state-backed entities focused on supporting local artisans. Lorenzo Bertelli, Prada’s head of Corporate Social Responsibility, emphasized the combination of traditional craftsmanship with modern manufacturing techniques.

Sales and Additional Information

The sandals are set to hit the market in February 2026. They will be available online and in 40 Prada stores globally. The retail price is approximately $939, equating to about £800 or 84,000 rupees.

Controversy Surrounding Design

In June, Prada garnered backlash for featuring sandals with open-toe braided patterns similar to the traditional Kolhapuri design. Initially, the brand labeled these as “leather footwear,” omitting any reference to their Indian inspiration. This led to accusations of cultural appropriation within India.

Due to the controversy, Prada later acknowledged the Indian roots of their design. A spokesperson stated the company values craftsmanship and heritage and has engaged with the Maharashtra Chamber of Commerce, Industry & Agriculture regarding the matter.

Government Involvement and Training Initiatives

On a recent visit, Maharashtra’s Social Justice Minister, Sanjay Shirsat, announced the new initiative will be titled ‘Prada Made in India – Inspired by Kolhapuri Chappals.’ He mentioned that artisans will undergo special training in response to Prada’s requirements. This training will be supported by LIDCOM, a state-backed entity that advances the leather industry in Maharashtra.

  • Around 200 artisans will receive three years of training in Italy.
  • The agreement for this initiative spans five years, with potential for extension.
  • The state government will also provide financial support to artisans.

Historical Context of Kolhapuri Sandals

Kolhapuri sandals carry a rich history dating back to the 12th Century. Named after a city in Maharashtra, these handcrafted sandals are made from leather and often dyed with natural colors. Their sturdy design makes them ideal for India’s climate.

In light of the backlash, many Kolhapur artisans expressed their discontent over Prada’s use of their traditional design without appropriate recognition. The new collaboration aims to foster a more inclusive approach to the representation of local craftsmanship in global markets.
