Ken Paxton Guides Texans on Claiming $700M Google Antitrust Settlement
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton is guiding consumers on how to claim their share from a significant $700 million antitrust settlement with Google. This settlement was reached after investigations revealed that Google violated antitrust laws affecting purchases on the Google Play Store.
Details of the Settlement
In 2023, Paxton, in collaboration with attorneys general from all U.S. states and several territories, secured this settlement. The issues stem from Google’s anticompetitive practices that emerged between August 2016 and September 2023. The investigation concluded that Google unlawfully monopolized Android app distribution and in-app payment processing.
What Consumers Need to Know
- Affected individuals will receive notifications via email from PayPal or through a text from Venmo.
- Notifications will be sent to the email address or mobile number linked to their Google Play account.
- If there is a mismatch with their PayPal or Venmo accounts, consumers have options to create one or link to a different account.
Supplemental Claims Process
Once automatic payments are processed, a supplemental claims process will follow. This is for consumers who:
- Do not have a PayPal or Venmo account and wish to opt out of registration.
- No longer have access to the email or phone number associated with their Google Play account.
- Expected a payment but did not receive it.
To receive email notifications about the supplemental claims process, consumers should submit their name, email, and phone number on the settlement website.
Exclusion and Objection Options
Consumers wishing to opt out of the settlement and pursue their own claims against Google must act before February 19, 2026. Objections to the settlement can also be filed by that date. A hearing is scheduled for April 30, 2026, to determine the settlement’s approval.
Attorney General Paxton encourages all Texans affected by Google’s practices to claim their rightful share, emphasizing the need for accountability among large technology companies.
