Beta Technologies to Double Vermont Workforce in 18 Months
Beta Technologies, an electric-aircraft manufacturer, is set to significantly expand its Vermont workforce. Recently, the company reported an addition of 300 employees and plans to hire an additional 1,000 over the next 18 months.
Workforce Expansion Plans
Beta’s CEO, Kyle Clark, confirmed this recruitment surge will approximately double the company’s Vermont staff, which currently totals around 900. The workforce increase follows the firm’s debut on the New York Stock Exchange, where it raised over $1 billion.
Clark emphasized that Beta intends to continue its growth in Vermont, stating, “The nucleus will stay here.” He anticipates that around 90% of the new hires will remain in the state.
Local Economic Impact
The company actively supports local businesses by sourcing technical materials like circuit boards and composite materials for its aircraft. Clark mentioned that while they have aggressive expansion plans, these could be adjusted in response to changing circumstances.
- Current Vermont employee count: ~900
- New hires planned: 1,000
- Percentage of staff expected to stay in Vermont: ~90%
Demand and New Contracts
Currently, Beta is facing high demand for its products. Earlier this month, the company signed a supply contract with Eve Air Mobility, valued up to $1 billion over 10 years.
Engaging the Local Workforce
Clark noted a trend of young Vermonters returning for job opportunities at Beta. This was highlighted during a recent career day in South Burlington, which saw hundreds of local young professionals and students in attendance.
The company’s internship program has been effective, with around 40% of those hired being Vermont residents and 40% being graduates from the University of Vermont.
Employee Support and Benefits
To attract new talent, Beta offers temporary housing for new hires facing challenges in the local housing market. Job openings at Beta vary widely, from a workforce coordinator role with an annual salary of about $60,000 to a Technical Support Lead position that can pay up to $185,000.
- Current job openings include:
- Workforce Coordinator: ~$60,000/year
- Technical Support Lead: up to $185,000/year
Beyond competitive salaries, all employees enjoy equity in the company and the potential for career advancement. The South Burlington campus also enhances employee experience with complimentary meals, onsite medical services, and even a tire-change facility.
Additionally, Beta is searching for a director for a proprietary childcare center, known as “Beta Kids.” This demonstrates their commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive work environment.
Clark concluded, “We want the best people,” reinforcing the company’s dedication to building a capable and invested workforce as it expands its presence in Vermont.
