GM Integrates Apple Music in All New Vehicles

General Motors (GM) has partnered with Apple to integrate Apple Music into its Chevrolet and Cadillac models. This change begins on Monday with an over-the-air update for vehicle owners. The introduction of Apple Music marks a significant shift, as GM has phased out Apple’s CarPlay system in 2023.

Background on the Integration

Many GM customers have expressed dissatisfaction with the removal of CarPlay, particularly through social media. This decision has sparked controversy, with some consumers stating they would not purchase a GM vehicle without CarPlay. In response, third parties have developed solutions to connect CarPlay to the latest GM vehicles.

Statements from GM

Sterling Anderson, GM’s chief product officer, acknowledged the sensitivity of the issue. He stated that the vehicles now feature superior access to applications and services compared to older models equipped with CarPlay.

Vehicles Receiving Apple Music Update

  • Cadillac Models: Vistiq, Escalade IQ, CT5
  • Chevrolet Models: Equinox, Blazer, Silverado electric vehicles; Corvette, Tahoe, Suburban gasoline options
  • Future Integration: Buick and GMC vehicles

Benefits of the Integration

Customers with 2025 model year vehicles in the United States and Canada will receive free streaming access to Apple Music via GM’s OnStar Basics telematics system for eight years from the purchase date. Some Cadillac models will also benefit from Apple’s Spatial Audio technology, enhancing the music experience through multiple speakers.

Unique Features

Apple Music’s Spatial Audio, supported by Dolby Atmos, provides an immersive listening experience that is not available through CarPlay. Anderson highlighted that this native integration enables enhanced sound quality.

Industry Context

This move follows a similar agreement between Apple and Mercedes-Benz in 2022. Other automakers, such as Tesla and Rivian, also offer Apple Music without CarPlay.

The Future of GM’s Software

GM aims to distance itself from CarPlay by implementing its software system, which allows better control over vehicle features without switching between interfaces. Improvements to GM’s Super Cruise driver-assist technology are expected, including hands-free driving capabilities in the 2028 Cadillac Escalade IQ, moving closer to full autonomous driving.
