Salvation Army Faces Challenges in Holiday Donation Drive, Officials Report
The holiday season is traditionally known for its spirit of giving. However, this year, The Salvation Army is facing significant challenges during its annual donation drive. According to officials, the organization is falling short of its donation target.
Current Donation Status
Major Marcus Jugenheimer, the divisional commander for The Salvation Army of Western Pennsylvania, reported that the charity has only reached 53% of its donation goal as of now. The campaign is set to conclude on December 24.
- Current donation achievement: 53% of target
- Previous year’s achievement: 95% of target
- Total donations last year: $2.2 million
Reasons for the Decline
The drop in donations can be attributed to several factors. Many individuals who contributed last year are now in need of assistance themselves. Major Jugenheimer highlighted inflation surpassing wage growth as a contributing issue.
- Increased need for assistance due to inflation
- Loss of previously available benefits
These factors have intensified the strain on The Salvation Army’s various assistance programs, which include food pantries and soup kitchens.
Impact on Assistance Programs
With reduced donations, The Salvation Army is concerned about its ability to support vital community services. Their programs provide essential help, including:
- Food security through pantries and soup kitchens
- Rental assistance for those facing homelessness
- Utility assistance to ensure residents have essential services
Ways to Help
Additionally, The Salvation Army is seeking volunteers for their bell ringing initiative. Interested individuals can find more volunteer information on the El-Balad website.
