Philippine Airlines’ Fleet Expansion

Philippine Airlines (PAL) has placed firm orders for a total of nine A350-1000 aircraft, with an option for three additional units. All deliveries are scheduled to be completed by 2027. The airline had previously operated two A350-900 variants and is now the first carrier in the region to incorporate the longer A350-1000 model into its fleet.

A Milestone Delivery

The aircraft’s journey commenced with a ceremony in Toulouse, France, before it flew directly to Manila in approximately 14 hours and 20 minutes. A crowd of aviation enthusiasts greeted the arrival of RP-C3510, marking a notable event for Philippine Airlines as it becomes the tenth airline to operate the A350-1000.

Aircraft Specifications

  • Passenger Capacity: Up to 382 across three cabin classes.
  • Business Class: 42 lie-flat seats in a 1-2-1 configuration.
  • Premium Economy: 24 seats in a 2-4-2 layout.

The A350-1000’s Impact

PAL President Lucio Tan III expressed pride in adding the A350-1000 to the fleet. This new aircraft is expected to enhance service offerings with its modern cabin design. The A350-1000 will serve as PAL’s flagship aircraft, transforming its widebody operations.

Future Operations and Routes

While Philippine Airlines has not yet confirmed specific routes for the A350-1000, it is anticipated that the aircraft will be deployed on long-haul flights. The airline currently operates routes to six destinations in the United States, including New York (JFK) and Seattle (SEA).

A350-1000 Popularity and Industry Context

The A350-1000 has been increasingly adopted by airlines globally, with about 360 aircraft sold. However, deliveries still lag behind those of the A350-900, which has over 1,000 orders. Airbus recently celebrated its 100th delivery of the A350-1000.

As Philippine Airlines embarks on this new chapter, the A350-1000 is poised to elevate the airline’s profile and service capability, promising a bright future for long-haul travel from Southeast Asia.
