AAA Predicts Record Holiday Travel Amid Regional Snow Disruptions

AAA has predicted a record holiday travel season this year, marking the busiest in nearly a quarter-century. Approximately 1.4 million residents from the Philadelphia region are expected to travel for Christmas. The majority, around 90%, will take to the roads, although inclement weather has led many to consider alternative modes of transport.

Impact of Weather on Travel

Recent snowstorms have influenced travel choices. Some travelers shifted to trains due to the winter conditions. The organization anticipates that about 47,000 individuals in the area will use trains, buses, or cruise ships this holiday season.

Traveler Experiences at 30th Street Station

At Philadelphia’s 30th Street Station, travelers shared their plans and experiences. Terri Ballard from West Philadelphia mentioned her journey to Williamsport to spend time with family. Meanwhile, Christine Barren from Marlton, New Jersey, expressed her excitement about visiting her granddaughters. She relished the comfort of rail travel, stating, “I can sit back and relax and let Amtrak take over!”

Jeremy Tinsley of Overbrook Park arrived to greet his mother following her cruise. He noted a stark contrast between the snow in Philadelphia and the warm Caribbean climate his mother had just enjoyed.

Road Conditions

  • Snow fell early in parts of Philadelphia, Quakertown, Allentown, and surrounding counties.
  • Drivers reported mixed road conditions, with some areas snowy but the main thoroughfares generally in good shape.

AAA spokesperson Jana Tidwell urged travelers to remain cautious, as weather systems can slow both road and air travel. Some drivers reported significant delays, while others experienced smooth rides despite the snowfall.

Expectations for the Holiday Travel

The evening is expected to bring improved travel conditions, especially after 7 p.m. on travel day. AAA projects Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to be the lightest periods for road travel. As the holiday approaches, many families look forward to reunions and celebrations. For travelers, this season represents cherished moments to create lasting memories with loved ones.
