NC Woman Released After ICE, CBP Detention at Raleigh Workplace

Fatima Issela Velazquez-Antonio, a 23-year-old woman, has been released from ICE custody after being detained for nearly a month. Originally detained by Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents at her workplace in Raleigh, North Carolina, she was later moved to a federal detention facility in Georgia.

Return to North Carolina

Fatima arrived back in North Carolina after a flight to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU) on Tuesday. Expressing her gratitude, she said, “I’m just so happy to come back home to family.” Her uncle, Gene Smith, played a crucial role in her return, stating, “I’m glad to have her home. It’s a true Christmas miracle.”

Ongoing Legal Challenges

Despite her release, Fatima’s journey to gaining legal status is not over. Smith emphasized the tough road ahead, stating, “It’s going to be a huge fight. But her family is sticking behind her.” Fatima has been in the U.S. legally since the age of 14, fleeing gang violence in Honduras.

Community Support

Congresswoman Deborah Ross, who advocated for Fatima’s release, expressed her satisfaction about the outcome. She criticized the temporary detention, pointing out that Fatima had no criminal history and was compliant with immigration regulations. Ross stated, “The real problem is that she was detained in the first place.”

Background and Legal Status

Ashley Lively, Fatima’s attorney, confirmed that she has no significant legal issues aside from minor traffic violations. Fatima possesses a valid work permit and social security number. Lively asserted, “She had the right to remain in the United States while her case was being adjudicated.”

Wider Context of Immigration Enforcement

Last month, immigration enforcement actions in North Carolina were heavily focused on regions like Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, where approximately 370 individuals were arrested over a five-day period. This context amplifies the concerns raised about the nature of immigration enforcement policies.

Fatima’s case highlights the complexities and challenges many face within the immigration system. Her family and attorney continue to advocate for her rights as they navigate the legal processes ahead.
