Virginia Family Sues Delta, KLM Over In-Flight Bedbug Attack
A Virginia family has filed a lawsuit against Delta Air Lines and KLM Royal Dutch Airlines, claiming they suffered injuries from bedbug bites during a flight earlier this year. The complaint was submitted in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia.
Details of the Incident
The Roanoke-based family, consisting of Romulo Albuquerque, his wife Lisandra Garcia, and their two children, Benicio and Lorenzo, took several flights starting March 21. They first flew from Roanoke to Atlanta on Delta, which was followed by a KLM flight to Amsterdam, concluding with a trip to Belgrade, Serbia.
According to the lawsuit, approximately two hours into the KLM flight, Garcia experienced the sensation of being bitten and soon discovered bugs crawling on her light-colored sweater. This prompted the couple to alert the flight attendants.
Allegations and Claims
The parents allege that the flight attendants advised them to lower their voices to prevent causing a panic onboard. The couple documented their experience with photos and videos, capturing images of bugs on Garcia’s sweater and the seats. They also included a photo of a KLM drink napkin reportedly covered with dead bugs in their legal filing.
Impacts of the Incident
- Physical injuries: The family reported raised and itchy welts, lesions, and rashes.
- Emotional distress: They cite feelings of humiliation and anxiety.
- Financial burden: The family is seeking at least $200,000 to cover medical expenses and lost personal items.
Response from Airlines
Delta Air Lines stated they would review the lawsuit and respond appropriately. They noted that the incidents occurred on flights not operated by them. KLM stated they were unable to comment on the allegations at the time but would address them through the appropriate legal channels.
This lawsuit shines a spotlight on the responsibilities of airlines regarding passenger safety and cleanliness on flights, particularly in light of the potential for health risks associated with bedbug infestations.
