South Florida Bank Employee Allegedly Steals $500K from Disabled Woman
A Bank of America employee is accused of stealing over $500,000 from a disabled woman, as announced by Miami-Dade prosecutors. State Attorney Katherine Fernandez Rundle and Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz revealed the arrest, emphasizing their commitment to protecting vulnerable individuals in the community.
Details of the Allegation
The accused, Mario Martinez, had worked at the Bank of America branch where the victim banked for many years. The 47-year-old woman had known him since 2016. After receiving an inheritance, the woman expressed her difficulties in managing the money to Martinez.
Role Misrepresentation
Martinez, portraying himself as a financial advisor, offered assistance. However, his actual position was in customer service. Prosecutors allege he exploited this trust by opening joint accounts without her permission and illicitly taking funds from her account.
Charges Filed Against Mario Martinez
- Exploitation of an elderly or disabled person (over $50,000)
- Organized fraud (over $50,000)
- Grand theft (over $100,000)
- Criminal use of personal information
- Tampering with or harassing a victim or witness
Bank of America’s Response
Bank of America stated its commitment to investigating any allegations of employee misconduct. The bank emphasizes client safety and protection, asserting these values have guided its operations for over a century.
Community Commitment to Justice
Fernandez Rundle described the arrest as a clear message that victimization of vulnerable residents will not be tolerated. Sheriff Cordero-Stutz echoed this sentiment, pledging to pursue anyone who exploits others in the community.
Currently, Mario Martinez is being held at the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center, awaiting his initial court appearance. The case highlights ongoing efforts to combat elder and vulnerable adult exploitation.
