A significant winter storm has impacted air travel at Detroit Metro Airport (DTW), causing numerous cancellations and delays. Over 200 flights experienced disruptions on Sunday due to harsh weather conditions, including strong winds and low temperatures.

Flight Cancellations and Delays at DTW

As of 8:06 p.m. on Sunday, FlightAware reported 40 flight cancellations and 250 delays affecting both arrivals and departures at DTW. The majority of the delays were related to departures, with 135 occurrences, while 18 cancellations were also noted.

The volume of flight disruptions surged after the Christmas holiday. On Thursday, just 97 delays were reported. This number escalated to 243 on Friday when freezing rain swept across southeastern Michigan. By Saturday, the situation worsened, resulting in 329 delays.

Impact of the Winter Storm

The adverse weather is attributed to a winter storm moving across the region, bringing rain, ice, and snow. The National Weather Service has warned residents of potential outages and blizzard conditions as the storm progresses.

  • Flight disruptions: Over 200 flights delayed, 40 canceled
  • High winds: Gusts up to 45 mph expected
  • Weather forecast: Showers and possible thunderstorms anticipated

Moving forward, the National Weather Service predicts a cold front will traverse from west to east late Sunday. This front is expected to exacerbate conditions overnight, which may further disrupt travel plans.

Travelers at DTW are urged to stay updated on flight statuses and prepare for potential delays as the winter storm continues to affect the region.
