Delta Cancels Binghamton Route Permanently, Offers Refunds
Delta Air Lines has announced the permanent cancellation of its route to the Greater Binghamton Airport, effective February 14, 2024. This decision ends commercial service to the airport in upstate New York.
Impact on Greater Binghamton Airport
According to Mark Heefner, the Greater Binghamton Airport Commissioner of Aviation, discussions are ongoing with Delta as they work to restore passenger service. Heefner stated, “We are in active discussions with Delta and are working closely with our state, local, and federal partners.”
Airport Renovations and Challenges
- The airport recently completed $54 million in renovations over the past two years.
- Despite improvements, the airport has had difficulty maintaining airline service.
- Avelo Airlines ceased operations in 2024 due to profitability issues, leaving Delta as the sole provider.
While Delta is halting flights, the Greater Binghamton Airport will continue to accommodate general aviation needs. This includes flight training, air ambulances, and agricultural aviation services until further notice.
Refund Options for Passengers
Passengers who have booked flights to the Greater Binghamton Airport after February 14 can expect to be contacted by Delta. They will be provided with options for refunds or the possibility to switch their travel plans to alternative routes.
Limited Alternatives for Travelers
Syracuse Hancock International Airport (SYR) is the nearest commercial airport, situated two hours away from Binghamton. This places additional travel constraints on those in the region.
Looking Ahead
Heefner acknowledged the challenges posed by Delta’s withdrawal but remains optimistic about future air service developments. He noted, “There is opportunity… if someone maintains the course and looks down the road, in a year or so, I think there’s going to be better service overall.”
The airport commission continues to explore partnerships with other airlines to enhance air travel accessibility for the Greater Binghamton community.
