Les Dennis recently honored the memory of his dear friend and comedy partner Dustin Gee, marking the 40th anniversary of his tragic passing. Dustin, who was just 43 when he died, left a significant impact on the comedy world, and his loss continues to be felt.

Tragic Events of January 1986

Dustin Gee was performing in the Cinderella pantomime at Southport Theatre, a production that began on December 20, 1985. On the evening of January 1, 1986, he suffered a massive heart attack while playing one of the ugly sisters. After delivering his lines, he clutched his arm and expressed to Les Dennis that he felt he might be dying. He collapsed shortly after.

The company manager, Basil Soper, was able to revive him, and he was taken to Southport General Hospital. Despite early signs of recovery, Dustin’s condition worsened. He initially woke up the following morning, greeting friends and family and even asking for tea and ice cream. Yet, his health deteriorated again, leading to his tragic death at 12:45 PM on January 2, 1986.

The announcement of Dustin’s passing shocked fans and colleagues alike. His funeral was held on January 9, 1986, at St Oswald’s Church in Fulford, York. Approximately 300 attendees, including notable figures like Liz Dawn and Bill Tarmey, gathered to pay their respects.
