Englewood Health, known as one of New Jersey’s remaining independent hospitals, has entered an agreement with RWJ Barnabas Health to integrate into its expansive academic health system. This decision aims to enhance healthcare services for residents in Bergen, Hudson, and Passaic counties. However, finalization of the deal hinges on the approval from both state and federal agencies.

Overview of the Integration with RWJ Barnabas

The partnership aligns with a growing trend in the healthcare sector, allowing organizations to leverage their resources effectively. Mark Manigan, President and CEO of RWJ Barnabas, emphasized the strategic benefits of combining balance sheets and scale for purchasing and technology. This collaboration is seen as a pathway to increased efficiency in healthcare delivery.

  • Englewood Hospital will become RWJ Barnabas’ 15th facility.
  • The partnership is not a rescue mission; Englewood is operating successfully.
  • Englewood received the “Top Hospital Award” for excellence in patient safety.

The Benefits of the Partnership

Warren Geller, President and CEO of Englewood, expressed that forming this partnership at a time of stability is key. “When you’re doing well and neither side is doing it out of need, that’s the best time to partner up,” Geller stated. The collaboration is expected to expand clinical services significantly.

  • Englewood patients will gain access to the Rutgers Cancer Institute, New Jersey’s only NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.
  • RWJ Barnabas will invest capital in Englewood, enhancing facilities and services.
  • Projects may include new operating rooms and improvements to the neonatal intensive care unit.

Future Developments and Employment Outlook

As part of the partnership, RWJ Barnabas plans substantial investments, which include modernizing health facilities and expanding ambulatory care. Importantly, both leaders assured that layoffs are not anticipated as a result of this agreement. Manigan pointed out, “This thing ain’t broke, so we’re not looking to fix it.”

Previous Attempts and Current Progress

This partnership comes after a merger attempt with Hackensack Meridian Health was halted by the Federal Trade Commission three years ago. Despite past challenges, Geller affirmed the ongoing respectful relationship with Hackensack Meridian Health.

Until the necessary approvals are obtained, both Englewood and RWJ Barnabas will operate as independent entities. Officials expect this approval process to extend throughout much of 2026.
