MTA Raises NYC Bus and Subway Fare to $3
Commuters in New York City will face increased transportation costs following the recent fare hikes implemented by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA). Starting Sunday, the base fare for subway and bus rides has increased by 10 cents, bringing it to $3.
MTA Fare Increases and Changes
This fare hike is part of a broader adjustment that affects various MTA services. It marks the transition from the traditional MetroCard system to OMNY, a tap-and-ride service.
Fare Details
- Subway and Bus Fare: Increased from $2.90 to $3.00.
- Express Bus Fare: Raised from $7.00 to $7.25.
- Unlimited Seven-Day Pass: Now priced at $35, up from $34.
- Unlimited Seven-Day Express Bus Pass: Increased from $64 to $67.
Notably, after 12 trips within a seven-day period, all additional trips will be free, ensuring that no rider pays more than $35 per week.
Transitioning to OMNY
With the elimination of the MetroCard, all bus riders are now required to use OMNY for fare payment. Cash and coin payments are no longer acceptable on buses.
Additional fare increases include:
- NICE Bus Fare: Increased from $2.90 to $3.00.
- Bee-Line Bus Fare: Raised from $2.75 to $3.00.
Furthermore, the Long Island Railroad and Metro-North have also adjusted their fare structures, with an increase of 4.5% for monthly and weekly tickets.
Historical Context of Fare Increases
This adjustment represents a continuation of fare increases that occur approximately every two years, typically during August. The last adjustment was in early 2023 when fares rose from $2.75 to $2.90.
This latest increase was delayed by six months to align with the implementation of the new OMNY payment system. As public transport in New York City evolves, riders are encouraged to adapt to these changes in the fare structure.
