‘Wizard of Oz’ Sphere Show Reaches $290M, Enhanced Version Announced

A new adaptation of “The Wizard of Oz” at Sphere in Las Vegas has achieved remarkable success, grossing $290 million and selling 2.2 million tickets since its launch in August 2023. Sphere Entertainment CEO James Dolan shared this information during a quarterly earnings call with investors.

The Wizard of Oz Sphere Show: Key Highlights

  • Total Revenue: $290 million
  • Tickets Sold: 2.2 million
  • Opening Date: August 2023
  • Running Time: 75 minutes (nearly 30 minutes shorter than the original film)

Innovative Features

This version of the classic tale includes advanced technology, such as AI enhancements and interactive elements. Audiences can expect:

  • Drone-controlled monkeys
  • Tornado-simulating wind effects
  • Bonus experiences in a merchandise-filled lobby

Dolan noted that the show and its innovative approach serve as a critical part of Sphere’s long-term vision. The adaptation was produced in collaboration with Warner Bros. and features the creative input of Jane Rosenthal and technology from Google DeepMind.

Future Developments

The company is also planning an enhanced version of “The Wizard of Oz.” Dolan mentioned that additional features will be included, although specific details were not revealed. This new adaptation serves as a model for future projects. One such project, titled “From The Edge,” is an extreme sports documentary directed by Oscar winners E. Chai Vasarhelyi and Jimmy Chin. It is set to feature several prominent athletes.

Projected Release Dates

“From The Edge” is expected to debut in late 2026, with a potential delay into early 2027 based on the performance of “The Wizard of Oz.” The Sphere is actively seeking new intellectual properties (IPs) for future adaptations, indicating high demand from other creators.

Expansion Plans

Currently, Sphere operates a single venue in Las Vegas but is expanding its footprint. Plans include:

  • A new venue in Abu Dhabi, currently in pre-construction
  • A smaller venue near Washington, D.C., expected to be completed within four years

Dolan expressed optimism for future projects, as interest in the unique format of Sphere continues to grow among IP holders. This puts “The Wizard of Oz” in a unique position, making it a fitting pilot project for this innovative medium.
