Understanding the ICCU Failure
The ICCU is crucial for converting high voltage to low voltage. It recharges the vehicle’s 12-volt battery, which powers essential systems such as:

A failure in the ICCU can render these systems inoperable, causing inconveniences and safety risks for drivers. The Consumer Reports survey of 380,000 vehicle owners revealed that many experienced sudden loss of power, leading to dangerous situations on the road.

In response to these issues, Hyundai and Kia have initiated recalls. The companies have attempted to resolve the problems through software updates and replacing faulty parts. Reports suggest that between 2% and 10% of EV owners have faced ICCU-related issues. In contrast, the industry average for charging problems in similar model years is 1% or less.
Repair Process
When drivers bring in their vehicles for repairs, technicians diagnose the problem by checking for specific trouble codes in the vehicle’s ECU. If issues are found, both the ICCU and the relevant fuse are replaced, accompanied by a low-conductivity coolant flush at no charge. If no trouble codes are identified, a simple software update is performed.
Over the past three years, many owners who received repairs are still experiencing power-related problems. This ongoing reliability concern has impacted consumer satisfaction and vehicle ratings.
Manufacturer Responses
Hyundai has communicated that it is working diligently with suppliers to expedite the availability of necessary parts for repairs. Additionally, the company aims to reimburse owners for some expenses incurred due to these issues. From Kia’s perspective, parts are reportedly in stock to perform essential repairs on affected vehicles. There has been no comment from Genesis regarding these ongoing concerns.
