OpenClaw Founder Criticizes EU Rules, Relocates to US

Peter Steinberger, the founder of OpenClaw, has voiced strong criticism of European regulations impacting the tech industry. After recently being hired by OpenAI, he has decided to relocate from Europe to the United States. Steinberger, originally from Austria, has lived in both London and Vienna.

Challenges Facing European Tech Talent

In a discussion on X, a European professor questioned why the continent struggles to retain tech talent. Steinberger’s response highlighted a key difference in attitudes. He pointed out that while people in the US show enthusiasm for tech innovation, his experiences in Europe involve criticism regarding responsibility and regulatory compliance.

Labor Regulations and Innovation Deficit

Steinberger emphasized that if he attempted to establish a tech company in Europe, he would be hindered by stringent labor laws. He noted that OpenAI employees often work six to seven days a week, a practice deemed illegal under European law.

Comparative Valuation of Tech Companies

The tech landscape in Europe contrasts sharply with that of the US. Currently, the most valuable company in Europe is ASML, a Dutch chip equipment manufacturer worth approximately $550 billion. In comparison, the United States is home to over ten companies, primarily in tech, that exceed a value of $1 trillion.

EU’s Innovation Report and Recommendations

A significant report released in 2024 evaluated the EU’s competitive standing, indicating that the region is lagging behind the US, especially in innovation. The report suggested numerous reforms aimed at reviving the tech sector. However, by the end of 2025, implementation of these recommendations has been minimal.

Hope for EU INC

Steinberger expressed some optimism regarding the EU INC initiative. This initiative aims to create a unified corporate legal framework to streamline business operations across Europe. Despite this hopeful outlook, he believes the initiative is losing momentum, citing “watered down” proposals and prioritization of national interests that ultimately harm collective progress.
