MPSC Approves DTE’s $242.4 Million Rate Increase for 2026

This adjustment will affect typical residential customers who consume around 500 kilowatt-hours per month. On average, these customers will see their monthly bills rise by nearly $5, reflecting an approximate 4.6% increase.

Background on Rate Increase

DTE initially proposed a much larger increase of $574 million last April. However, the commission opted for a lesser amount. DTE aims to use the additional funds to enhance electric reliability and strengthen the energy grid across Southeast Michigan.

Investments Approved by MPSC

In conjunction with the rate hike, the MPSC has also sanctioned several crucial investments for DTE, including:

  • $200 million for pole and pole top maintenance and modernization.
  • $348 million in 2026, with a further $282.5 million earmarked for 2027 for DTE Electric’s infrastructure recovery mechanism.
  • Funding for an ongoing five-year tree-trimming cycle.
  • Underground pilot projects in Ann Arbor and Attica Township.
  • $70.5 million for either upgrading existing substations or constructing new ones.

Matt Paul, President and CEO of DTE, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to affordability, stating that they take their responsibilities to customers seriously. As these changes will impact many residents, DTE is under pressure to improve service while managing rising energy costs.
