Lamborghini Halts Aggressively in Electric Vehicle Expansion
Lamborghini has officially decided to suspend the launch of its highly anticipated all-electric vehicle, the Lanzador EV. This announcement comes directly from CEO Stephan Winkelmann, who has described investment in battery-only models as “an expensive hobby.” He noted that the demand from affluent customers for electric models remains “close to zero.”
Lamborghini’s EV Strategy Shift
Instead of pursuing solely electric vehicles, Lamborghini plans to transition all of its cars to plug-in hybrids by 2030. Winkelmann emphasized the brand’s commitment to continue production of traditional combustion engines for as long as feasible. He highlighted that customers appreciate the unique sound and feel of conventional engines, which current electric vehicles fail to replicate.
Market Dynamics and Industry Challenges
The shift in strategy follows an extensive internal review and market research. According to reports from the London Times, major automakers like Stellantis, General Motors, and Ford have incurred substantial financial losses due to lower-than-expected EV demand. Additionally, the Volkswagen Group, which oversees Lamborghini, Porsche, and Bentley, has faced challenges with its own electric vehicle strategies.
Future Prospects for Electric Vehicles
The Lanzador EV was first announced with an expected release in 2029. However, with the suspension of this model, Lamborghini seems to be reassessing its approach. Despite the current halt on electric projects, Winkelmann suggests that a future electric Lamborghini might still be possible, stating, “Never say never, but only when the time is right.”
Sales Performance and Regulatory Considerations
In 2025, Lamborghini achieved a record sales milestone of 10,747 cars. The company’s unique status as a low-volume manufacturer allows it to seek exemptions from UK and EU emissions regulations beyond 2035. Lamborghini argues that its vehicles are driven relatively infrequently, which could justify these exemptions.
