SAG-AFTRA Condemns Nexstar’s Nationwide Local TV Station Layoffs

SAG-AFTRA, the union representing local television journalists, has strongly criticized Nexstar’s recent layoffs at local stations nationwide. This action has raised alarm over the implications of media consolidation.

Nexstar’s Layoff Impact

Several major stations have reported significant cuts, including:

  • KTLA in Los Angeles
  • WGN in Chicago
  • WPIX in New York

In Los Angeles, notable figures such as anchors Glen Walker and Lu Parker, along with meteorologist Mark Kriski, were impacted. The Chicago station WGN specifically laid off eight union members, according to reports.

Union Response

SAG-AFTRA leaders voiced their concerns on Wednesday, asserting that these job eliminations jeopardize community access to reliable news. Sean Astin, the union president, emphasized that the layoffs compromise essential resources and talent relied upon by local audiences.

Astin stated, “By laying off journalists across the country, Nexstar is eroding the resources and talent that local communities rely on for trusted news.” He further urged regulators to prioritize public interests amid these layoffs.

Nexstar’s Position

Nexstar, the largest television station owner in the United States, has refrained from commenting on specific personnel matters. However, the company referenced taking necessary measures to adapt to significant industry changes.

Currently, Nexstar is engaged in a proposed $6.2 billion merger with Tegna, a rival station owner. Amid this merger, Astin highlighted the need for regulatory scrutiny, especially since Federal Communications Commission chairman Brendan Carr has shown support for the deal.

Ongoing Negotiations

SAG-AFTRA is actively negotiating multiple labor agreements with Nexstar. The union has raised concerns about proposed reductions in severance pay and new contract terms that could restrict workers’ negotiation freedoms.

Duncan Crabtree-Ireland, SAG-AFTRA’s national executive director, vowed to advocate for substantial agreements to safeguard journalists and their audiences. He proclaimed, “SAG-AFTRA will not stand by while the future of local news is put at risk.”

As negotiations progress, the union remains committed to protecting the interests of its members and ensuring the vitality of local journalism.
