Scout EREVs to Feature Half the Towing Capacity of BEVs, CEO Announces
Volkswagen’s Scout Motors, based in South Carolina, is generating excitement with over 150,000 reservations for its upcoming Terra pickup and Traveler SUV. The company recently announced a shift from an all-electric vision to incorporating gasoline range-extenders.
Changes in Towing Capacity
This transition has raised concerns about towing capacity. Last year, Scout CEO Scott Keogh noted that adopting the Harvester range-extender would halve the towing capacity of the Terra pickup, reducing it from 10,000 pounds to 5,000 pounds. This announcement sparked significant online reactions across various forums.
However, at a recent Automotive Press Association event, Keogh indicated that Scout may have solutions to the towing capacity issue. While details are scarce, he expressed confidence in the team’s ability to address this challenge.
Market Demand and Performance Specifications
Current data shows that out of the more than 2,700 confirmed reservations tracked on Scout EV forums, over 85% of buyers have chosen the gasoline range-extended option, while only 13% opted for the all-electric version. This market demand underscores the importance of towing capacity in consumer preferences.
Scout is positioning both the Terra and Traveler as robust vehicles. They feature:
- Body-on-frame construction
- Solid rear axles
- Mechanical locking differentials
- 800-volt architecture for fast charging
Both models are designed to deliver impressive performance, aiming for:
- 1,000 pound-feet of torque
- Acceleration to 60 mph in just 3.5 seconds
- A minimum of 350 miles range for all-electric versions
- Extended range of up to 500 miles with the Harvester range extender
- 2,000 pounds of payload capacity
Towing Capabilities Compared
The Traveler is expected to achieve a towing capacity of 7,000 pounds, while the Terra aims for 10,000 pounds. For context, Rivian’s R1S has a towing capacity of 7,700 pounds, and the R1T reaches up to 11,000 pounds. Additionally, Ram’s forthcoming 1500 REV targets a substantial 14,000 pounds, although this figure may be subject to change alongside their own range-extending solutions.
As developments unfold, Scout Motors will continue to refine its models ahead of anticipated production, projected for 2028. Enthusiasts and consumers alike are eager to see how the company navigates these challenges and delivers on its promises.
