LAX Rideshare Fees to Surge as Automated People Mover Debuts
Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is considering a significant change to rideshare fees as it prepares for the debut of the Automated People Mover. The Los Angeles World Airports Board of Commissioners is set to review a proposal that could raise fees for rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft.
LAX Rideshare Fees Overview
Currently, customers incur an airport fee of approximately $4 to $5, typically noted as an “LAX Airport Surcharge.” The new proposal aims to increase this fee by $2 to $8 based on specific pick-up or drop-off locations.
Automated People Mover and Fee Changes
The aim of the fee increase is to discourage congestion in the central terminal area, also known as the horseshoe, while promoting the use of the Automated People Mover. This system is expected to significantly improve passenger transport within the airport.
- The Automated People Mover is anticipated to open later this year.
- New curb space for rideshare drop-off and pick-up will be established at the “ground transport center.”
- Rideshare fees to the transport center will be set at $6.
- Direct curb access along the horseshoe will incur a $12 fee.
These changes will also affect taxi and limousine services, which operate under a different fee structure. If approved, increased fees could generate approximately $100 million in the first year of the Automated People Mover’s operation.
Reasons Behind the Fee Increases
The fee structure is designed to encourage the use of the new transit infrastructure. David Reich, a deputy executive director for the airport, indicated that the investment aims to reshape vehicle movement throughout LAX.
Public Response and Resistance
Uber is actively campaigning against the proposed fee hikes. Danielle Lam, in charge of local California policy for Uber, argued that the increases would unfairly burden travelers and families reliant on affordable transportation options.
Additionally, ten state lawmakers from the Los Angeles County delegation have expressed strong opposition to the proposal. They argue that managing airport congestion should not rely on excessive fees.
Alternative Transportation Options
Travelers seeking alternatives to rideshares and taxis have several options. The FlyAway bus facilitates transport between LAX and locations such as Union Station in downtown Los Angeles and Van Nuys. Moreover, the LAX/Metro Transit center, accessible from various bus routes and rail lines, is operational, with shuttle service to the airport available.
With the preparations for the Automated People Mover nearing completion, the conversation around LAX rideshare fees continues to be a focal point for both transportation officials and concerned citizens alike.
