Teamsters Urge DOJ to Halt Paramount-Warner Bros. Merger
The International Brotherhood of Teamsters is urging the U.S. Justice Department to intervene against the proposed merger between Paramount Pictures and Warner Bros. Discovery. The union emphasizes that this merger should not proceed without “substantial and enforceable safeguards” aimed at ensuring increased domestic production and protecting jobs.
Union Concerns Over Job Security
On Thursday, the Teamsters communicated their concerns to the DOJ’s Antitrust Division. Sean M. O’Brien, president of the Teamsters, highlighted the merger’s potential impact on workers, stating, “This merger threatens the livelihoods of the very workers who built these studios into industry giants.” He warned of the dangers of corporate consolidation, which he argues leads to job losses and reduced domestic production.
Call for Enforceable Protections
The union insists that unless Paramount and Warner Bros. provide guaranteed protections for workers and labor standards, the merger should be halted. O’Brien pointed to the negative effects following The Walt Disney Company’s acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019, which resulted in significant job losses and project cancellations.
Paramount’s Response
A spokesperson for Paramount declined to comment on the Teamsters’ position. However, during a recent interview with CNBC, Paramount CEO David Ellison discussed the anticipated effects of the merger. He stated that the film slate has already increased since Skydance assumed control of Paramount. Under new ownership, he projected that Warner Bros. would release approximately 15 films annually.
Industry Challenges Ahead
Lindsay Dougherty, director of the Teamsters’ motion picture division, expressed concerns over the industry’s current instability. She reiterated that the film and television sector has experienced fluctuations in recent years, arguing that “another mega-merger is the last thing this industry needs.” The union continues to advocate for the rights and job security of entertainment workers amid ongoing industry changes.
