Volkswagen Launches First Custom EV After Leading in China Market
Volkswagen has made significant strides in the Chinese automotive market, recently selling over 100,000 vehicles in a single month. This surge has positioned the company as the top-selling car brand in China, surpassing competitors BYD and Toyota.
Volkswagen’s Strategic EV Launches in China
As part of its strategy to maintain this lead, Volkswagen aims to introduce a new electric vehicle (EV) every two weeks. Dubbed “China Speed,” this initiative reflects the company’s commitment to the rapidly evolving electric market.
ID.UNYX 08: The First Custom EV
The first of these new vehicles is the ID.UNYX 08, Volkswagen’s inaugural custom-tailored electric SUV designed for the Chinese market. It represents a crucial element of Volkswagen’s “In China, for China” strategy.
The ID.UNYX 08 is a collaboration with local partner XPeng, featuring advanced German engineering and local technological enhancements. This electric SUV boasts an 800V electric architecture, enabling ultra-fast charging that allows it to recharge from 10% to 80% in approximately 20 minutes.

Volkswagen is set to launch the ID.UNYX 08 in the first half of 2026. In total, the company plans to release 20 new custom EV models in China within this year, with the next model anticipated by the year’s end.
Long-term Ambitions
By 2030, Volkswagen aims to introduce a total of 50 new New Energy Vehicle (NEV) models in China. This ambitious plan is part of an effort to solidify its position as the leading international automotive manufacturer.
Despite its recent success, Volkswagen faces a competitive landscape with multiple domestic rivals, including BYD, which recently launched its Blade Battery 2.0 technology. The rapidly changing market poses both challenges and opportunities for Volkswagen as it strives to remain at the forefront.
