Sutter Health, based in California, is set to acquire Allina Health, one of Minnesota’s preeminent healthcare providers. The announcement was made on a Tuesday, signaling a significant change in the state’s healthcare landscape.

Under the terms of the acquisition, Allina Health will retain its name, board of directors, and regional headquarters situated in Minneapolis. However, it will operate under the leadership of Sutter President and CEO Warner Thomas. Sutter’s leadership has committed to investing $2 billion to enhance outpatient care access and adopt technological advancements, including artificial intelligence tools.

Concerns Among Healthcare Workers
Despite the promising outlook, the acquisition has raised concerns among Allina employees. Approximately 600 physicians and healthcare providers represented by Doctors Council-SEIU are currently negotiating their initial contract since forming a union in October 2023. The union expressed worries over how this acquisition may impact job security, contracts, and pension plans.
Union Response and Call for Oversight
The Doctors Council-SEIU urged Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison to oversee the acquisition, citing concerns similar to those raised during a previous attempted acquisition by Sanford Health. Although the union has not filed a strike notice, they have authorized multiple strikes due to ongoing frustrations in contract negotiations.
Recent Changes in Allina Health
In 2022, Allina Health faced operational challenges, including the closure of four clinics in the Twin Cities and the shuttering of its birth center in Faribault. These changes reflected ongoing adjustments in service delivery within the organization.
The acquisition of Allina Health by Sutter Health is projected to finalize by the end of 2026, pending necessary approvals and due diligence. As the healthcare landscape evolves, the implications of this merger will be closely monitored by stakeholders across Minnesota.
