Gallup: Gen Z’s Perception of AI Becoming Increasingly Negative
Recent findings from a Gallup survey illustrate a growing skepticism among Generation Z regarding artificial intelligence (AI). Conducted in partnership with the Walton Family Foundation and GSV Ventures, the survey reveals a notable shift in sentiment over the past year.
Negative Perception of AI Among Gen Z
AI’s reception among Gen Z, particularly in the education sector, has grown increasingly negative. The survey reports that 31% of respondents now express feelings of anger towards AI, a rise of 9 percentage points from the previous year. Conversely, enthusiasm has waned, with only 22% indicating excitement about AI, down from 36% in 2022.
Concerns About Learning
In the realm of education, apprehensions are mounting. A staggering 74% of K-12 students believe AI will complicate learning in the future. Among Gen Z adults, this concern is even more pronounced, with 83% agreeing with this perspective.
- 74% of K-12 students see AI complicating learning.
- 83% of Gen Z adults share this view.
The survey, which involved over 1,500 participants aged 14 to 29, highlights a decline in the perceived benefits of AI in educational contexts. Only 46% of respondents believe AI tools can enhance their learning speed, a decrease from 53% the prior year.
AI Adoption Rates
Despite these concerns, the adoption of AI is still present among Gen Z. Approximately 51% of this demographic engages with AI on a weekly basis, marking a modest increase of 4 percentage points since last year. Yet, even amidst this usage, skepticism persists. Over half, or 52%, of K-12 students acknowledge the necessity of AI skills for college preparedness.
Workplace Implications
Worries about AI’s impact extend beyond education, touching on workplace dynamics as well. The survey indicates that nearly 48% of respondents fear that the risks associated with AI outweigh its benefits in professional environments. This is a significant rise from 37% the previous year.
Reassessing AI’s Role
According to Stephanie Marken, a senior partner at Gallup, Gen Z is not outright rejecting AI but is instead critically evaluating its role in their lives. “This generation acknowledges AI’s advantages while growing increasingly troubled about its long-term implications on learning and career readiness,” she stated.
Calls for Caution in Higher Education
The rising unease surrounding AI is also prevalent in higher education. Faculty at California State University are advocating against the renewal of a $17 million contract with OpenAI, citing concerns over the effectiveness of ChatGPT Edu. A petition opposing the renewal has amassed over 3,400 signatures, emphasizing the belief that the AI tool does not offer adequate support for teaching.
In summary, the Gallup survey underscores a critical juncture for Generation Z’s interaction with AI. As their perceptions shift from enthusiasm to scrutiny, there is a clear call for more thoughtful integration of AI tools both in educational settings and the workplace.
