Audi Sales Plummet by One-Third in U.S. Market
In the first quarter of 2026, Audi faced a significant decline in U.S. sales, dropping by 30 percent to just under 30,000 vehicles sold. This decline serves as a stark warning for the premium German automaker, which is struggling against a backdrop of cooler market demand and rising competition.
Audi Sales Plummet in Q1 2026
The latest sales figures reveal that Audi sold a total of 29,886 units in the U.S. during the quarter. This slump puts Audi behind competitors such as BMW and Lexus, which experienced smaller sales declines of 3.9 percent and 2.5 percent, respectively. Mercedes-Benz also outperformed Audi, with only a 3 percent decrease in sales.
Performance of SUV Models
Audi’s SUVs, traditionally a strong segment for the brand, failed to meet expectations. Key figures include:
- Q5: 10,100 units sold, down 26 percent
- Q3: Retired with a 20 percent decline prior to discontinuation
- Q7: 30 percent decrease
- Q8: 25 percent drop
Despite being the cornerstone of Audi’s lineup, these models did not perform as anticipated.
Sedan Sales Show Some Resilience
On a brighter note, Audi’s sedans exhibited better performance. The sales figures for sedans include:
- A5: Up 6 percent
- A6: Up 9 percent
- A3: Slight increase of 1 percent
- A7: Plummeted 72 percent
- A8: Fell 43 percent
The performance of the A7 is attributed to its discontinuation in 2026, while the A8 faces the same fate this summer.
Challenges in the Electric Vehicle Market
Audi’s electric vehicle (EV) lineup further complicates the picture. The e-tron models struggled significantly, with the following declines:
- e-tron GT: Down 75 percent to just 63 units
- Q4 e-tron: Plummeted 93 percent, selling only 90 units
- Q6 e-tron: Crashed 90 percent, with 309 sold
New variants like the A6 e-tron are on the horizon, but current sales underscore challenges in Audi’s EV strategy.
Used Vehicle Sales Show Positive Trend
In a contrasting trend, Audi’s certified pre-owned vehicle sales rose by 6 percent, totaling 12,820 units. This suggests that while new car sales are struggling, there remains demand for Audi’s vehicles in the used market.
Future Outlook for Audi
Looking ahead, Audi plans to introduce new models, including the Q3, Q7, and Q9. However, with sales numbers as they stand, the automaker’s recovery needs to come swiftly to regain its footing in the competitive luxury segment.
