BMW Elevates 7 Series with New Battery for 2027 Release

BMW is enhancing its 7 Series lineup with significant updates for the 2027 model release. The introduction of advanced battery technology promises improved performance and efficiency across various models.

New Electric Options for 2027

The BMW i7 will be available in two variations at launch: the 50 xDrive and the 60 xDrive. Both models feature dual-motor powertrains with the following output:

  • i7 50 xDrive: 449 hp (335 kW) and 487 lb-ft (660 Nm)
  • i7 60 xDrive: 536 hp (400 kW) and 549 lb-ft (745 Nm)

The i7 60 xDrive boasts impressive acceleration, achieving zero to 60 mph in just 4.6 seconds. The i7 50 xDrive is slightly slower, hitting the same speed in 5.3 seconds.

Innovative Regenerative Braking

BMW continues to raise the bar with adaptive regenerative braking. This system adjusts the level of regeneration based on navigation data and surrounding traffic conditions. Additionally, drivers have the option to manually select from low, medium, and high settings to optimize their driving experience.

Combustion Engine Updates

The 740 model incorporates a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six engine. This engine produces 394 hp (294 kW) and 398 lb-ft (540 Nm) of torque, allowing the 740 xDrive variant to accelerate from zero to 60 mph in under five seconds.

BMW plans to introduce a V8 option in an upcoming M-badged version. For now, the 750e xDrive plug-in hybrid combines the inline-six with an electric motor, generating 483 hp (360 kW) and 516 lb-ft (700 Nm) of torque. It achieves zero to 60 mph in 4.6 seconds, matching the performance of the i7 60 xDrive.

Battery and Electric Range

The 7 Series plug-in hybrid maintains a usable battery capacity of 18.7 kWh, providing an EPA-rated electric range of 34 miles (55 km). This aspect remains unchanged from the previous model generation.

Pricing Information

The upcoming 7 Series models see modest price adjustments. The 740 starts at $101,350, and the 740 xDrive at $104,350, including a destination charge of $1,550. Conversely, the i7 models have larger price increases with starting prices of:

  • $106,200 for the i7 50 xDrive
  • $126,250 for the i7 60 xDrive

These vehicles are expected to hit the U.S. market before the end of the year, while the 750e xDrive is slated for a 2027 release. Pricing details for the hybrid model will be disclosed closer to its launch date.
