Chevy Sonic returns as compact crossover for Brazil in 2026

Chevy is bringing the Sonic name back as a compact crossover, with sales in Brazil set to begin in May 2026. Chevrolet chose Brazil for the model’s global debut and says the new Sonic is aimed at younger buyers in Latin America.

The company says the vehicle was developed to sit between the upcoming Onix Activ and the Tracker. It is also the first Chevrolet model to debut the brand’s updated bowtie emblem in Brazil.

Brazil Debut And Size

Chevrolet says the Sonic measures 166.5 inches long, 69.7 inches wide and 60.2 inches tall. GM also cites nearly 8 inches of ground clearance, which places the vehicle above a low hatchback stance and into the compact crossover category Chevrolet is targeting.

The old Sonic stayed on sale from 2012 through 2020. The new version uses the name on a higher-riding body type, with Chevrolet calling it a stylish compact coupe SUV for Latin America.

Gravataí Plant In Brazil

GM says the Sonic is being built at its Gravataí plant in Brazil. The company also says the vehicle was developed through a fully virtual process supported by AI, a method Chevrolet has paired with a design that includes split front lighting, a taller nose, heavy black lower body cladding and a distinct rear treatment.

The top RS trim will add a more aggressive appearance package. Chevrolet has not yet officially published a full powertrain breakdown or a complete interior reveal, leaving buyers with a clearer look at the exterior and launch timing than at the rest of the package.

Onix Activ And Tracker

Chevrolet is placing the Sonic between the upcoming Onix Activ and the Tracker, giving it a defined position in Latin America’s compact crossover market. For Brazilian buyers, that means the new model is set to arrive as a regional entry rather than a return to the old Sonic hatchback-and-sedan formula.

May 2026 is the first sales window Chevrolet has given for Brazil, and the company has already made the model’s size, shape and trim strategy public before showing the full cabin or drivetrain.
