M&S Sets May 30 Closure for Swansea City Centre Store — M&s Store Closure

M&S says its Swansea city centre m&s store closure will take place on Saturday, May 30, ending the Oxford Street shop’s run in the heart of the city. The move affects around 92 staff and leaves the retailer working with local partners on whether it can keep a presence in Swansea.

The company said the shutdown is part of plans to reshape its store estate and direct investment toward outlets that better meet customer needs. For Swansea shoppers, that means the city centre branch will disappear at the end of May, even as M&S says it will keep serving the area through nearby stores and online.

Oxford Street Store Faces May 30 Exit

“Our M&S Swansea city centre store will close on Saturday, May 30,” a spokeswoman said. The store sits on Oxford Street in Swansea city centre, where it has been described as one of the area’s most prominent retail destinations for many years.

In February, M&S said approximately 92 members of staff were employed there when the closure was announced. That scale of staffing shows the decision is not just a property change but a direct hit to a sizeable local workforce, with a city-centre anchor tenant now due to go dark.

“As previously announced, this decision forms part of our plans to reshape our store estate so we can invest in stores that better meet the needs of our customers,” the spokeswoman said. The company has tied the closure to its wider estate review, rather than to a one-off local event, and that leaves the future shape of its physical footprint in Swansea unresolved for now.

M&S also said it remains committed to serving customers in Swansea through nearby stores and online, while it works closely with Swansea Council and other local partners to explore opportunities for a future M&S presence in the city. Swansea Council said it is continuing to work with M&S to find a new site for the company in the city.

Swansea Council Keeps Talks Open

“We are disappointed that M&S has decided to close its store at the end of May. However, we are continuing to work with M&S to find a new site for them in the city,” a Swansea Council spokesman said. That leaves a narrow but tangible next step for shoppers and staff alike: the Oxford Street store is leaving, but discussions over a replacement location are still live.
