Niantic Launches Pokemon Go Timed Research Test for May

Niantic is rolling out pokemon go timed research in May with a test for its new “Evergreen Weeks” feature, giving players 3 different research paths during non-event weeks. The first non-event week is expected to begin on May 5th, and the test is meant to keep the game active between larger events.

May 5th Research Paths

During the May test run, the three options will be Exploration, Skill, or Battle. The research will not necessarily be the same week to week, which means the choice available to players can change as the test continues.

That gives players something specific to pick up during weeks when the game usually has less going on outside daily rewards and ongoing research. In a game that has stayed popular for 10 years, that gap has become part of the routine some players notice most.

Steeled Resolve Ends May 4th

The test arrives just after the 2026 edition of the Pokémon GO Steeled Resolve event ends on May 4th. Lechonk Community Day is scheduled for May 9th, and Spring Marathon is scheduled for May 12th as the first weeklong event after Steeled Resolve.

Niantic shared details of the Evergreen Weeks test with community ambassadors in Discord and Campfire before the information spread to the broader community. Some players said the new feature does not sound like enough to make them play on non-event weeks, while others said they would rather see reruns of older events or the return of Spotlight Hour instead.

For players deciding whether to log in during the quieter stretch, the practical change is simple: May will not be a blank week. Niantic is betting that letting people choose between Exploration, Skill, and Battle will be enough to draw them in until the next event cycle begins.
